History
The club's foundation is disputed, with speculation over the beginnings in 1868, 1869 or 1872. It was formed by a group of sporting enthusiasts, some of whom played cricket in summer and bowls, quoits, running and golf. In autumn 1868, younger members attending Kilmarnock Academy first played football in the Barbadoes Green area. At that time football in Scotland was considered rough and disorderly, and had never been played in an organised manner.
The group, later called the club's founding fathers, played with their own rules more similar to rugby league than association rules. A committee was formed to organise the game, and after raising money, placed an advertisement in the 2 January 1869 issue of the Kilmarnock Standard for a general meeting of the Kilmarnock Foot-ball Club at Robertson's Temperance Hotel on Portland Road on 5 January 1869. No official minutes or outcomes of that meeting are known to exist.
Ayrshire Derby
Kilmarnock's biggest rivalry is with Ayr United, contesting the Ayrshire derby. In national competitions (Scottish Football League, Scottish Cup, Scottish League Cup, Scottish Challenge Cup) Kilmarnock have beaten Ayr United 59 times, and 43 times in defunct competitions such as the Ayrshire Cup, Ayrshire League, Ayr Charity Cup, Kilmarnock Charity Cup and West Sound Trophy. On 28 January 2012, the teams met at Hampden Park in the League Cup semi-final, the first Ayrshire derby in a major competition semi-final and the first at a neutral venue. Kilmarnock won 1–0 with a 109th-minute goal from Dean Shiels, and the crowd of 25,057 was the highest post-World War II attendance for the derby. The fixture was revived in 2021–22 when both clubs were in the same division after Kilmarnock's relegation to the Scottish Championship.
Club operations
Since June 1906, Kilmarnock F.C. has been owned by the private limited company The Kilmarnock Football Club Ltd. Since 2014, majority shareholder Billy Bowie oversees all operations; the club became debt-free under his control in 2017. In May 2018, Phyllis McLeish, commercial director of QTS Group, became the first female board member in over 20 years. Later that month, Cathy Jamieson, former MP for Kilmarnock and Loudoun and a lifelong fan, was appointed as the second female board member after being nominated by The Killie Trust Initiative, which raised over £100,000 for a trust representative on the board.
The earliest known kit from 1879 was an all-blue jersey with white trousers and a crest based on the Clan Boyd chief's heraldic crest. From 1887 to 1890 the club wore black and white striped tops, then predominantly blue and white striped or hooped shirts. Between 2008 and 2014, kits were manufactured under the club's own brand 1869, followed by Erreá, then Nike from 2016 to 2020. The current manufacturer is Hummel, and kits are sold only at Rugby Park.
