History

Dumbarton were a powerhouse in the early days of Scottish football, claiming the league title in the competition's first two seasons—sharing the inaugural crown with Rangers. The club folded in 1901 and stayed inactive until 1905. Though the side that returned was officially presented as a fresh start, later rulings from the SFA and Scottish Combination suggest they treated it as the same entity, likely to speed up its re-entry into organised leagues.

For most of the time since, Dumbarton have played outside the top division, last appearing there in 1984–85. They are the first club—and one of just two—to win a league championship in all four tiers of the Scottish system. In May 2021, Stephen Farrell took over as manager, and ownership shifted from Brabco to Cognitive Capital. The club went into administration in November 2024.

On 24 June 2025, a new company owned by Canadian businessman Mario Lapointe took control, while the old company entered liquidation; Dumbarton stayed in League Two with a five-point deduction already in place. Frank McKeown became manager in December 2025.

Colours and badge

For the 2026–27 season, Dumbarton F.C. will debut kits made by VSN. The home shirt is mostly white, featuring a band in black and gold, while the away kit is solid gold with thin black stripes. The club crest shows an elephant carrying a castle on its back, a nod to Dumbarton Rock and its castle, which comes from the town’s historic emblem. The rock, a volcanic plug, is thought to look like an elephant. The badge was first redesigned in 2000 when the team left Boghead for The Rock, and in May 2026 its yellow was switched to old gold to match the club’s traditional colors. The nickname “The Sons” comes from “Sons of The Rock,” a phrase for people born in Dumbarton.

Stadium

Dumbarton play their home games at The Rock, an all-seated stadium used since 2 December 2000. The only stand is overshadowed by Dumbarton Rock and sits beside the banks of the River Leven. The stadium has been named for sponsorship purposes for most of its existence: Strathclyde Homes Stadium (Dec 2000 – Sep 2011), Dumbarton Football Stadium (Sep 2011 – Feb 2012), Dumbarton Football Stadium Sponsored by DL Cameron (Feb 2012 – Jul 2012), The BetButler Stadium (Jul 2012 – Sep 2014), Dumbarton Football Stadium (Sep 2014 – Jun 2015), The Cheaper Insurance Direct Stadium (Jul 2015 – May 2017), The YOUR Radio 103FM Stadium (July 2017 – May 2018), C&G Systems Stadium (May 2018 – May 2021), Dumbarton Football Stadium (May 2021 – September 2021), Moreroom.com Stadium (September 2021 – May 2023), Dumbarton Football Stadium (May 2023 – July 2024), Marbill Coaches Stadium (July 2024 – April 2026), and The Rock sponsored by Marbill Coaches (April 2026 – present).

Prior to December 2000, the team played at Boghead Park from 1879 until the end of the 1999–00 season; their 121-year tenure was the longest a senior Scottish club had stayed at the same ground. Between May and November 2000, Dumbarton shared Cliftonhill in Coatbridge with Albion Rovers. In November 2014 the club's then-owners Brabco announced an intention to move to a new ground after only 15 years at The Rock, situated at Young's Farm north of Dumbarton between Dalreoch and Renton.

The proposed development would have doubled capacity to 4,000, with the existing site used for 180 houses and a walkway along the River Clyde. The plans were rejected by West Dunbartonshire Council in March 2018. In April 2026 the club announced the stadium would be renamed from Dumbarton Football Stadium to The Rock, the name always used by supporters; for sponsorship reasons it is formatted as 'The Rock sponsored by Marbill Coaches'.

Internationals

Between 1880 and 1898, 18 Dumbarton players earned Scotland caps. After Harry Chatton’s 1932 call-up for Ireland, no Sons player represented a foreign nation until Dimitris Froxylias debuted for Cyprus in 2018, earning two caps. In 2026, defender Ali Omar became the club’s first African international, playing for Somalia.
