Production
In 2018, YouTube ordered a six-episode first season of the show. The executive producers were Jordan Peele, Jose Molina, Charlie Sanders, Adam Bernstein, Win Rosenfeld, Tom Lesinski, Jenna Santoianni, Sam Hansen, Jimmy Miller, Keith Raskin, and Linda Morel. Adam Bernstein directed the first two episodes, and Jose Molina ran the show. By January 2019, Amy Heckerling, Tricia Brock, and Bernstein were each set to direct two episodes. The first season's guest stars included Sara Gilbert, Dylan O'Brien, Ed O'Neill, Rosario Dawson, Michael Cera, Laverne Cox, and LeVar Burton. Additional guest stars announced in January 2019 were Awkwafina, Hannah Simone, Gillian Jacobs, Malcolm Barrett, Mark Hamill, Yvette Nicole Brown, Trevor Jackson, Travis Bryant, and Aulii Cravalho. Filming started on July 20, 2018, in Los Angeles' Toy District, with additional work at the Calvin S. Hamilton Pedway and the Jewelry District.
