Young was born in Chicago Heights, Illinois, and attended Bloom High School there. He was a three-year starter at Notre Dame, lettering all four years from 1990 to 1993. As a senior, he was an All-American selection with 6.5 sacks and 67 tackles. As a junior, he was an Honorable Mention All-American with 7.5 sacks. He graduated in 1994 with a major in marketing. In the NFL, he made Honorable Mention All-Pro in 1995. His finest statistical season was 1996, recording 84 tackles, 11.5 sacks, and two safeties, earning his first Pro Bowl. In 1997, despite only four sacks, he helped San Francisco finish first in total defense. In 1998, he led all NFL DTs with 9.5 sacks before a season-ending leg injury that required a metal rod. He returned in 1999 with over 70 tackles, 11 sacks, and a safety, earning his second Pro Bowl and the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award.
