History
José Francisco Ortega became the first European to visit the valley in 1769. The Spanish founded Mission Santa Clara de Asís in 1777 as part of their colonization of California. During the Conquest of California, the Battle of Santa Clara was fought between Californios led by Francisco Sánchez and American forces. Santa Clara College was established on the mission grounds in 1851, and the town incorporated in 1852, receiving a state charter by 1862.
For the next century, agriculture dominated the economy, with orchards and vegetables thriving in the fertile soil. The population reached about 5,000 by the early 20th century and remained stable for many years. In 1905, John J. Montgomery conducted the first public high-altitude human flights over Santa Clara using gliders. The semiconductor industry emerged around 1960, transforming the city and the surrounding Valley of Heart's Delight, leaving little of its agricultural past.
Santa Clara's first medical hospital opened in 1963 on Kiely Boulevard, replaced in 2007 by a Kaiser Permanente center on Lawrence Expressway. Agnews State Hospital, a major mental health facility, saw more than 100 deaths in the 1906 earthquake; the site later housed Sun Microsystems and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Urban renewal policies in the 1950s and 1970s accelerated downtown decline. In 1957, the city applied for federal urban renewal funds under the 1954 Housing Act, proposing the "Franklin Facelift"—initially a preservation effort that evolved into a redevelopment plan involving demolition of historic buildings and street grid reconfiguration.
