History

The residency was announced at RuPaul's DragCon NYC on September 8, 2019, with two rotating casts. The first included Asia O'Hara, Derrick Barry, Kameron Michaels, Naomi Smalls, Vanessa Vanjie Mateo, and Yvie Oddly; the second featured Aquaria, Coco Montrese, Eureka O'Hara, India Ferrah, Kahanna Montrese, Kim Chi, and Shannel. RuPaul served as director, Jamal Sims as choreographer, and Ryan Grainger as assistant choreographer and dance captain for the Pit Crew.

The Flamingo Showroom previously housed the Donny and Marie Osmond residency. Ticket pre-sales began September 10, 2019, with general sale three days later. The first cast opened January 30, 2020, but performances ran only until March 15 before the COVID-19 pandemic forced a hiatus. Rescheduled shows resumed August 5, 2021, with the same first cast.

In 2022, Eureka O'Hara, Jaida Essence Hall, Plastique Tiara, and Trinity K. Bonet joined; later additions included Latrice Royale, Kennedy Davenport, and Jorgeous. The 300th show occurred October 6, 2022. Deja Skye and Daya Betty joined April 21, 2023. Before the 500th show, Bosco, Lawrence Chaney, Nicky Doll, and Pangina Heals were introduced on May 31, 2023. The cast celebrated its 700th show in March 2024.

Production

The show incorporates an insular plot mirroring the drag competition format, with performers portraying characters vying for the crown. The host announces a mini-challenge and maxi-challenge; RuPaul appears via pre-recorded video clips. At the end, the audience judges the final lip-sync battle by applause. English production designer Andy Walmsley created the scenery, ranking it number one for its ambitious creative energy. In an interview, Walmsley said he channeled his inner drag queen to design an over-the-top, glitzy-cartoonish look. In April 2024, Derrick Barry told Trinity K. Bonet they did not mesh well together, making the job a nightmare; Bonet replied on Instagram that she understood why Barry would not reply about her return. Barry had severe arthritis in both legs, making work difficult, and eventually quit.

Forty-five Drag Race queens have been part of the cast: 40 from the American version and 5 international queens (one each from the British, Canadian, and Filipino versions, plus the hosts of Drag Race France and Drag Race Thailand).
