Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon
A dark fantasy reimagining of Arthurian legend in an open world.
Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is an open-world action role-playing game from developer Questline and publisher Awaken Realms. It reimagines Arthurian legend in a dark fantasy setting, launching in early access for Windows on March 30, 2023, before its full release on May 23, 2025, for Windows, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
The story begins with a plague called the Red Death that devastated the distant Homelands. Arthur Pendragon led survivors to conquer Avalon, home of the ageless, four-armed Fore-Dwellers who controlled the Wyrdness—a primordial force that could create monsters or entire domains. After heavy losses, humanity prevailed, suppressing the Wyrdness with Menhir totems designed by Merlin, and founded Kamelot. Six hundred years after Arthur’s death, the Menhirs are failing, the Wyrdness is spreading, and the Red Death has returned. The player character, one of the infected quarantined on an island asylum, is freed by a warrior named Caradoc. Bound to a fragment of Arthur’s powerful soul, the player is cured and gains the ability to travel through the Wyrdness. Caradoc wants to destroy Arthur’s soul to end the cycle of destruction but agrees to help the player find the remaining soul fragments tied to Excalibur, Arthur’s shield, and his crown.
After a storm, the player lands in southern Avalon. They must hunt for the fragments while dealing with bandits, the undead, the plague, and an impending war between Kamelot and the Dál Riata tribes, as well as tensions with the Horns of the South garrison and the sovereign city of Cuanacht. Each fragment reveals more of Arthur’s past: outmatched by the Fore-Dwellers, Arthur and Merlin conducted desperate human experiments, including on the immortal and disillusioned Caradoc, and even on Arthur himself. The once-noble king became obsessed with victory and legacy, regardless of the cost.
After collecting the fragments, the player learns from Archdruid Orrin about a final piece: Arthur’s humanity, embodied by a quiet fisherman named Hob. Broken by failure and sacrifice, Hob begs to die as a man. The player then faces multiple choices. Siding with Caradoc destroys Arthur’s soul, leaving the throne empty and the land uncertain but free from the cycle; any other choice makes Caradoc fight the player.

Lore & Background
The game is set in Avalon, a domain once controlled by ageless four-armed beings called the Fore-Dwellers, who wielded the Wyrdness—a primordial force capable of creating monsters and entire domains. After the Red Death ravaged the distant Homelands, Arthur Pendragon led survivors to conquer Avalon, suppressing the Wyrdness with Menhir totems designed by Merlin and establishing Kamelot. Six hundred years after Arthur's death, the Menhirs are fading, the Wyrdness is spreading, and the Red Death returns. The player character, afflicted by the plague, is quarantined on an offshore island asylum, freed by a warrior named Caradoc, and becomes bound to a piece of Arthur's soul, curing their disease and allowing them to traverse the Wyrdness.
The player must locate fragments of Arthur's soul bound to Excalibur, his shield, and his crown while navigating bandits, the undead, the plague, and an imminent war between Kamelot and the Dál Riata tribes. As fragments are found, Arthur's past reveals desperate human experiments performed by Arthur and Merlin, including on Caradoc and Arthur himself. The final piece of Arthur's soul is his humanity, a fisherman named Hob, who begs to die. Multiple endings are possible: siding with Caradoc destroys Arthur's soul; siding with Archdruid Orrin makes Arthur whole at the cost of the player's life; the player can take Arthur's place; or give Arthur's soul to another NPC. A secret ending, achieved with the Weaver Life Spindle, reveals Arthur was the reincarnation of a Fore-Dweller Prince, and restores him as a Fore-Dweller, calming the Wyrdness and ending the Red Death.
Reader's Guide
Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is notable as a video game adaptation of a successful board game universe, expanding the Tainted Grail setting beyond the earlier deck-building roguelike Tainted Grail: Conquest (2020). The game drew frequent comparisons to The Elder Scrolls series for its open-world design, first-person perspective (with an optional third-person mode), and emphasis on exploration and player choice. Its critical reception was mostly positive, with praise for world design, exploration, and narrative, though it was described as a 'fun but familiar' open-world RPG. Technical issues included visual glitches, quest indicator bugs, and looting problems; character models were criticized for a 'Play-Doh skin' appearance and expressionless faces, though hair quality was noted as impressive by IGN. Dialogue performance quality varied, and cave environments became visually repetitive. The impact of player choices was noted to diminish after joining certain factions. The game's estimated 50-70 hours of playtime, over 200 side quests, and systems such as crafting, fishing, alchemy, cooking, house decoration, farming, and sketchbook journaling contributed to its scope. A paid DLC expansion, Sanctuary of Sarras, was released in December 2025.
