Lore & Background

The game's story begins after a Calamity unleashed a horde of dangerous monsters that ruled the land one hundred years ago but was vanquished by a group of heroes. The Calamity returns, shattering the peace. A cat named Nyanza (or Nyan for short) is sent by the Empire to Paw Village to protect it. Accompanied by a small creature named Macaron, they rescue a bunny girl named Erin along the way. The village sage, Alby, is distrustful of them due to his issues with the Empire, but gives them a magic spell book. Nyan moves into a farm and searches for ancient relics to help protect the villagers. The Empire's Rivero Fortress sends forces to help defend the village. Commander Hazel, accompanied by a creature named Jet (Macaron's cousin), seeks the relics for her own mission. After winning Alby's trust, he explains his hatred for the Empire. Jet and Hazel later reveal that Jet and Macaron were both assigned as guardians for Nyan and Hazel, and that Alby is Hazel's grandfather. Alby intends to harness the relics' powers for himself as revenge for the Empire destroying his life and murdering Payne, Nyan's grandfather. Nyan and Macaron confront Alby, but the spirit of Payne appears and convinces Alby to let go of his revenge. Alby leaves to redeem himself, and Nyan and Hazel continue protecting the village.

Reader's Guide

Kitaria Fables is notable for blending action role-playing combat with farming and crafting mechanics. The game uses custom movesets instead of a traditional class system, with one button for attacking, one for dodging, and a third for casting spells. Players can upgrade weapons and armor using materials from monsters, and grow crops to restore health. Accessories provide stat increases when worn. The game features a variety of areas and many bosses that respawn every in-game day. Its reception was mixed to average: Screen Rant gave it 2.5 out of 5, while Kate Gray of Nintendo Life rated it 7.6 out of 10, positively comparing it to Fantasy Life. Robert Ramsey of Push Square praised the soundtrack and addictive gameplay, giving it 7 out of 10. Jeremy Peeples of Hardcore Gamer gave the game a large amount of praise. The game's combination of farming simulation and monster combat drew comparisons to Stardew Valley and Rune Factory, though critical consensus placed it as a modest entry in the genre.
