Lore & Background

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth is set in a world where players control a human character who can command Digimon, digital creatures with unique abilities, in turn-based battles. The story follows Aiba, a young Japanese student who receives a message from a hacker and joins the cyberspace network EDEN. After being attacked by a mysterious creature and becoming a digital entity, Aiba is recruited by detective Kyoko Kuremi to investigate EDEN Syndrome, a condition causing users to fall into comas. The plot involves the Royal Knights, the Eaters (digital entities consuming mental data), and a conspiracy tied to Kamishiro Enterprises. Players choose between Palmon, Terriermon, or Hagurumon as their starting partner, with 249 unique Digimon available, including seven DLC Digimon and two exclusive to the Western release. The game features a New Game Plus mode retaining Digimon, non-key items, money, memory, sleuth rank, scan percentages, and Digifarm progress.

Reader's Guide

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth is considered a reboot of the Digimon Story series, developed with player feedback in mind. Producer Kazumasa Habu chose to retain the base concepts of the Story series—simple turn-based battles with a leveling system—so players could play without reading instructions. The focus on collecting and training Digimon meant ensuring at least the same number of trainable Digimon as the original Digimon Story game, Digimon World DS. Achieving this with 3D models instead of sprites was challenging but successful. The game was first announced in a December 2013 issue of V Jump, with a teaser trailer later that month. Character designs were by Suzuhito Yasuda, known for Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor and Durarara!!. The music was composed by Masafumi Takada, with sound design by Jun Fukuda. A sequel, Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth – Hacker's Memory, was released in Japan in 2017 and in Western territories in 2018. In July 2019, a port of the game and its sequel for Nintendo Switch and Windows was announced as Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition, released on October 18, 2019 (PC version a day early). The Complete Edition includes 92 new Digimon from Hacker's Memory, totaling 341 Digimon. Cyber Sleuth was removed from the US PSN store on December 20, 2018, but remained available in Europe and South East Asia until the end of January 2019.
