Wildermyth
A tactical RPG where procedural generation shapes unique character stories.
Wildermyth is a tactical role-playing game from Worldwalker Games, an independent studio based in Austin, Texas. It launched in early access on Steam in November 2019, with the full 1.0 release following in June 2021 for Linux, macOS, and Windows. Console versions for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S arrived in October 2024 through publisher Auroch Digital.
The game blends handcrafted story arcs with procedural generation. Players begin by selecting from randomized characters, who gain traits and grow into seasoned heroes over time. These characters form friendships or rivalries, age, and shape both narrative and gameplay through procedural events. The main campaign follows a defined beginning, middle, and end, but each playthrough differs due to the system. Combat is turn-based and grid-based, similar to the XCOM series. Outside battle, players make strategic choices on a campaign map—rebuilding a village, for example, might leave less time to prepare for an invasion.
Worldwalker Games had only six full-time employees. Designer Nate Austin described the approach as alternating layers of handcrafted and procedural content. The story is delivered through comic-strip sequences called the "Library of Plays." Active development ended in May 2024, following the release of the Omenroad DLC.
Wildermyth received generally favorable reviews, with a Metacritic score of 86 based on 26 critic reviews. Praise focused on its procedural generation for character development and storytelling. It was nominated for Ultimate Game of the Year, PC Game of the Year, Best Indie Game, and Best Storytelling at the 39th Golden Joystick Awards, and for Role-Playing Game of the Year at the 25th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards.
