Roguelikes of the 2020s, Part 1 Codexery

Returnal

A time-loop roguelike shooter on the alien planet Atropos.

Returnal

Returnal is a third-person shooter video game released in 2021, developed by Housemarque and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 5. A Windows version, handled by Climax Studios, came out on February 15, 2023. The story follows Selene Vassos, an astronaut who lands on the planet Atropos while chasing a signal she calls the "White Shadow," only to become trapped in a repeating time loop. Its gameplay blends bullet hell, third-person shooting, and roguelike mechanics.

Critics generally praised the game for its visuals, combat, audio design, and technical accomplishments, though opinions were split on its difficulty and roguelike structure. It earned several year-end awards, including Best Game at the 18th British Academy Games Awards. By February 2022, Returnal had sold 866,000 copies, prior to its Windows release in February 2023. A spiritual successor, Saros, arrived in 2026.

The game is a psychological horror title set in a sci-fi future. Players control Selene, a space pilot wearing a high-tech suit and wielding advanced weapons, stranded on Atropos and unable to break the loop. Each death resurrects her, forcing her to navigate alien environments, fight extraterrestrial creatures, and endure shifting visions in a world that changes with every cycle.

Returnal is divided into two halves, each containing three biomes. Dying during a run sends the player back to the start of that half. Selene can dash and later unlock a grappling hook to reach predefined points in rooms. Enemies fire arcade-style geometric patterns—energy lines, fireballs in spirals, squares, spheres, hoops, and lasers—that require careful movement to avoid. Weapons range from a basic pistol to an Electropylon Driver, each with unique traits that can be leveled up for enhanced perks and damage. A melee weapon lets Selene attack enemies, break resource geodes, or destroy barriers. The Ascension update added online cooperative multiplayer for up to two players.

In the plot, Selene disobeys orders from the ASTRA Corporation to investigate the White Shadow signal on the forbidden planet Atropos, which feels oddly familiar. Her ship, Helios, crash-lands, and she discovers corpses of herself, realizing that death resets time to the crash. The planet changes with each loop, and she experiences vivid visions.

Lore & Background

Returnal is set in a futuristic science fiction setting where Selene Vassos, an ASTRA Corporation pilot, disobeys orders to investigate the 'White Shadow' signal on the off-limits planet Atropos. Upon crash-landing, she discovers that every death resets her to the moment of the crash, with the planet changing each loop. She encounters corpses of herself, alien technology, and a replica of her childhood home, where she recalls memories and repeatedly sees an astronaut in an antique suit. The plot reveals that Selene may have used an alien weapon to shoot down her own ship, and after escaping Atropos and dying of old age on Earth, she reawakens back on the planet, trapped in an endless cycle. Further exploration leads to an underwater abyss where she finds a replica of an old car and encounters a massive octopus-like creature, revealing a vision of a car crash involving a woman and a child. Collecting Sunface Fragments allows Selene to confront a pregnant humanoid creature in the car, implying she is the astronaut that caused the crash, and she swims to the surface crying out the name 'Helios'.

Reader's Guide

Returnal is notable for its integration of roguelike mechanics into a third-person shooter with bullet hell elements, requiring players to replay through six biomes after each death. The game's lack of a save feature was a divisive point: some critics saw it as a deliberate choice that reinforced themes of mortality, while players criticized it. The Ascension update added online cooperative multiplayer for up to two players and an endless Tower of Sisyphus mode. The game's technical achievements on PlayStation 5 include use of the DualSense controller's haptic feedback, 3D spatial audio, ray tracing, and reduced loading times via the custom SSD, running at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second via temporal upsampling and checkerboard rendering. The visual style relies heavily on particle systems and volumetric rendering built in-house as extensions to Unreal Engine. The game sold 866,000 copies by February 2022, and a spiritual successor, Saros, was released in 2026.
