Lore & Background

Balatro was developed over a two-and-a-half year period by LocalThunk, an anonymous solo developer based in Saskatchewan, Canada. The game was inspired by the card game big two and the roguelike video game Luck Be a Landlord. Initially, LocalThunk treated Balatro as a side project to put on a résumé, not anticipating the success of the game. Despite the game's poker theme, LocalThunk said he does not play poker, nor does he want the game to be used for gambling by casinos.

The game features a singleplayer roguelike structure where players choose a deck with unique effects and then progress through antes, each containing three blinds of increasing difficulty. Players must score points by playing poker hands from a starting 52-card deck, with a limited number of hands and discards each round. The primary means of altering scoring are Joker cards, of which 150 were included at release, along with consumable Tarot, Spectral, and Planet cards that modify the deck or upgrade hands.

Balatro has significant support for modification through third-party mod loaders, with notable mods including Cryptid (adding over 120 intentionally unbalanced Jokers) and a Multiplayer mod that allows players to face off during a Nemesis Blind. The game can be played in endless mode up to ante 39, at which point a floating-point overflow causes progression to become impossible.

Reader's Guide

Balatro's significance lies in its fusion of poker hand rankings with roguelike deck-building mechanics, creating a deeply strategic loop that rewards both planning and adaptability. The game's universal acclaim and commercial success—over 5 million copies sold by January 2025—demonstrate its broad appeal beyond traditional roguelike audiences. Its nomination for top prizes at The Game Awards 2024, the 28th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards, and the 21st British Academy Games Awards, along with winning Game of the Year at the 25th Game Developers Choice Awards, cemented its status as a landmark title of the decade. The game's modding community has extended its longevity, with popular mods adding new content and multiplayer functionality. Balatro's legacy includes inspiring discussions about the boundaries between poker and video games, as its developer explicitly distanced the game from gambling. The game's careful balance of risk and reward, combined with its elegant presentation of complex interactions, has made it a reference point for future deck-building roguelikes.
