Lore & Background

Lost in Random: The Eternal Die is a spin-off of the original Lost in Random, developed by Stormteller Games, a studio formed from the merger of Zoink and Image & Form. The game's director, Martin Storm, described it as more gameplay-focused than the original. Levels are procedurally generated, though gameplay areas were handcrafted by the team. The game was revealed in August 2024 at Gamescom.

Gameplay is presented from an isometric perspective. Queen Aleksandra wields four primary weapons—a sword, a hammer, a bow, and a lance—and can charge attacks for more damage. She is accompanied by a sentient dice named Fortune, which can be thrown at enemies for significant damage but must be manually retrieved. Card attacks serve as special abilities. Between runs, relics unlock additional activities for both the player character and Fortune, and weapons can be upgraded and modified. Blessings provide permanent passive perks.

The plot takes place shortly after the original game. Queen Aleksandra becomes trapped in a pocket dimension inside the Black Die after battling dark lords, and finds herself turned into a young girl. She reunites with Fortune and encounters Mare the Knight, the evil entity controlling the Black Die who manipulated Aleksandra and murdered her sister. Aleksandra and Fortune journey through the dimension, meeting other trapped inhabitants. After defeating Mare and escaping to her castle, Aleksandra destroys the Black Die, completing her revenge but leaving her kingdom in ruins. If all inhabitants are rescued before defeating Mare, the Black Die is transformed into the Eternal Die, free from Mare's influence, though Aleksandra's future is left unknown.

Reader's Guide

Lost in Random: The Eternal Die received generally favorable reviews, with 85% of critics recommending it on OpenCritic. Alex Hopley of Gamereactor praised the game's world, cast performance, and combat system, though he noted it did not deviate significantly from the roguelike formula established by Hades. Miri Teixeira of GamesRadar commended the visual design and described the game as an accessible roguelike, praising its progression system and combat. However, Teixeira expressed disappointment that the focus on gameplay wasted 'a concept ripe for more storytelling,' and noted that players unfamiliar with the original game might find the narrative difficult to follow. The game's significance lies in its status as a spin-off that shifts the original's action-adventure style into a roguelike framework, emphasizing procedural generation and replayability while retaining the distinctive aesthetic and characters of the Lost in Random universe.
