Lore & Background

Fights in Tight Spaces was first announced in March 2020, originally planned for a 2020 early access release but pushed to 2021. A free Prologue demo, allowing players to run through to the first boss character, was released in December 2020. The full early access launched on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S via the Xbox Game Preview Program on February 8, 2021, and for Microsoft Windows on February 24, 2021. The full release followed on December 2, 2021, with ports to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on May 25, 2023.

Players take the role of an unnamed agent tasked with taking out several boss characters across the game's chapters. To reach a boss, the player must beat several smaller scenarios, defeating the boss's henchmen. In roguelike fashion, the order of scenarios, type of henchmen, and rewards change on each runthrough. Combat plays out in a turn-based manner, with the player using action points to play cards for attacks, movements, or defensive stances. A combo meter builds from most card plays, and some cards require a minimum combo meter or may terminate a combo. The player sees enemy intentions for the next turn and can use this to dodge or push enemies into gunfire. Turns alternate until all enemies are incapacitated or the player's run ends. After a successful encounter, the player may watch it play out in real time cinematically. Between encounters, players choose a new card to add to their deck and earn money to buy, upgrade, or remove cards.

Reader's Guide

Fights in Tight Spaces received generally favorable reviews on Metacritic, with 93% of critics recommending the game on OpenCritic. During its early access period, reception was favorable, with comparisons of the gameplay to James Bond, Bourne, and John Wick films done by way of Slay the Spire. The game's legacy includes two sequels: Knights in Tight Spaces, announced in 2024 and released on March 4, 2025, which adapted the core gameplay to a medieval fantasy setting with multiple party members and character classes; and 2 Fights in 2 Tight Spaces, released in early access on June 7, 2026, which introduced cooperative multiplayer and weapons that change the functionality of players' cards when picked up. The original game established a distinctive blend of deck-building and tactical positioning in confined spaces, influencing later titles in the series.
