Despot's Game

Build an army, manage hunger, and survive procedurally generated labyrinths.

Despot's Game: Dystopian Battle Simulator, a tactical roguelike, came out in 2022. Konfa Games built it, and tinyBuild handled the publishing. Players put together an army of up to 49 units to fight through randomly generated mazes. Success depends on balancing roles like damage dealers, tanks, healers, and magic users, as well as units that apply buffs or debuffs. Troops can be bought from shops, and better weapons appear as the player advances. A food meter, tied to army size, affects performance—hungry fighters become less effective.

This is the second game in Konfa's "Despot" series, following *Despotism 3k* (2018). A third entry, *Slime 3K: Rise Against Despot*, launched fully on October 31, 2024. During the development of *Despot's Game*, tinyBuild bought Konfa Games in 2022 for up to $5.4 million in cash and shares. In a 2025 interview, developer Nikolai Kuznetsov said a new Despot game was in the works, inspired by *Balatro*, aiming to change gameplay between runs without permanent upgrades.

Critics gave *Despot's Game* "mixed or average" scores on Metacritic. Cog Connected praised its art and gameplay loop but noted a tough difficulty curve. Xbox Era also criticized the difficulty while complimenting the design, music, and some deep mechanics.

Lore & Background

Despot's Game is the second title in Russian studio Konfa's 'Despot' series, following Despotism 3k, released for PC in 2018. A third title, Slime 3K: Rise Against Despot, had a full release on October 31, 2024. During the development of Despot's Game, publisher tinyBuild acquired Konfa Games in 2022 for a maximum consideration of $5.4 million in cash and newly issued shares.

Gameplay involves recruiting units and equipping them with weaponry purchased from shops, with better weapons becoming available as the player progresses. A food meter, determined by army size, affects unit effectiveness when hungry. A 2025 interview with developer Nikolai Kuznetsov indicated that a new game in the Despot series was under development, with Balatro listed as an inspiration for changing gameplay between runs without permanent upgrades.

Reader's Guide

Despot's Game received 'mixed or average' reviews according to Metacritic. Cog Connected praised the game's artistic design and gameplay loop, while criticizing its difficulty curve. Xbox Era also criticized the difficulty but complimented the design, music, and certain gameplay depth and mechanics. The game's significance lies in its position as the second entry in Konfa's Despot series, bridging the earlier Despotism 3k and the later Slime 3K: Rise Against Despot. The acquisition by tinyBuild during development for up to $5.4 million highlights the commercial interest in the series. The mention of Balatro as an inspiration for future titles suggests an evolving design philosophy focused on run-to-run variation without permanent upgrades. The mixed reception, particularly regarding difficulty, indicates that while the core loop and aesthetic were well-received, balancing remained a point of contention among critics.
