Rick Sanchez
Richard D. "Rick" Sanchez, voiced by Justin Roiland in seasons 1–6 and Ian Cardoni from season 7 onward, is a sociopathic, nihilistic, and alcoholic mad scientist. He is the widowed father of Beth Smith and maternal grandfather of Morty and Summer, and is 70 years old as of season 3. Rick often drags Morty on high-concept science-fiction misadventures, displaying immense intelligence and referring to himself as the Smartest Man in the Universe. He disparages ordinary human conventions like school and marriage but shows genuine affection for his grandchildren.
His speech includes frequent burp-talks due to alcoholism. He is identified as Rick C-137. In "The Wedding Squanchers", he was revealed to be a freedom fighter against the Galactic Federation and surrendered to protect his family. In "The Rickshank Rickdemption", he orchestrated a scheme to destroy the Federation's economy and the Council of Ricks, also attempting to drive Jerry away. The character was inspired by Emmett Brown and Reed Richards.
Morty Smith
Mortimer Chauncey "Morty" Smith, voiced by Justin Roiland in seasons 1–6 and Harry Belden from season 7 onward, is Rick's neurotic 14-year-old grandson. He is good-natured but easily distressed, often reluctant to follow Rick's morally questionable plans and traumatized by the outcomes. The main Morty is called the "Mortiest Morty" by Rick due to his courage, and is later designated "Morty Prime". In "The Rickshank Rickdemption", Morty is angry at Rick for abandoning the family and nearly kills him when Summer's life seems threatened, but is glad when Rick returns.
In "The Rickchurian Mortydate", he refuses to leave with Rick. He accidentally impregnates an alien breeding robot in "Raising Gazorpazorp", fathering Mortimer Smith Jr., and later has another son, Naruto, in "Rickdependence Spray". Despite a learning disability and low self-esteem, Morty shows intelligence and resourcefulness, learning to use Rick's devices and manipulate him. The character was loosely inspired by Marty McFly.
