Persian Socialist Soviet Republic

A short-lived Soviet republic in north-west Persia, 1920–1921.

Last updated

It is also known as the Socialist Soviet Republic of Gilan or the Gilan Republic.[1] A Soviet republic that existed briefly in northwestern Persia, located south of the Caspian Sea, was never recognized as a state.[1]

Key facts and history

Rothstein sent a message to Soviet officers among Ehsanollah Khan's force not to obey his orders, resulting in that campaign's defeat.[2] Historian Kayhan A. Nejad counters that Soviet leaders withdrew support after months of infighting between communist and non-communist factions.[3] According to Cosroe Chaqueri, the Soviet Union's shift in priority from promoting global revolution to safeguarding itself led to the withdrawal of backing for the Gilan Republic.[4] Letters exchanged between Soviet ambassador Theodore Rothstein and Mirza Kuchak Khan provide clear evidence for that interpretation.[2]
