Jungle Movement of Gilan
Rebellion in Gilan against monarchy and foreign interference, later declaring a Soviet republic.

The Jungle Movement of Gilan (also known as the Jangal Movement) was a rebellion against the monarchist central government of the Sublime State of Iran in the province of Gilan, lasting from 1915 to 1921. Led by Mirza Kuchik Khan and other activists, the movement initially demanded autonomous status for the province, an end to central government corruption, an end to foreign interference, and land reform. In its later phase, however, the movement declared the Socialist Soviet Republic of Gilan, aligning itself with the Soviet Union and adopting an explicitly communist orientation. Though not separatist, its main ideas were rooted in ridding the country of government corruption, foreign imperial domination, and opposition to the existing monarchy.
Background
The movement was launched in October 1915 in the forests of Kasma, Gilan, by Mirza Kuchik Khan, an experienced activist from the Constitutional Revolution, along with other local activists. They initially demanded autonomous status for Gilan, an end to central government corruption, an end to foreign interference, and land reform. The movement enjoyed strong support from the peasantry, working class, and poor population, though its leaders were described as merchants and landlords, with Mirza part of the democratic wing of the Iranian bourgeoisie.
In the early years, the Jangalis fought against foreign invaders, defeating armies of two landowners and a combined Russian and Persian Cossack force. They were nearly destroyed in January 1916 by Nikolai Baratov's forces but recovered, taking control of large amounts of territory in Gilan. After the Russian Revolution in 1917, Marxists within Iran became more organized and collaborated with the Jangal movement.
The Jangalis organized the Committee of Union of Islam and launched a magazine, Jangal, in 1917. The British sent intelligence agent Edward Noel to negotiate or gather intelligence, but Noel was arrested. British forces attacked Rasht and bombed Mirza's residence, issuing an ultimatum to surrender.
In 1918, British and White Russian forces under Colonel Lazar Bicherakov decisively defeated the Jangalis at the Battle of Manjil. The Jangalis then made an agreement with British forces on 12 August, abandoning pan-Islamism and dissolving the Committee of Union of Islam.
After resuming hostilities, the Red Army entered Anzali in 1920, and the Jangalis proclaimed the Socialist Soviet Republic of Gilan on 5 June, declaring full independence from the central government. A coup against Mirza on 31 July 1920 made Ehsanollah Khan Dustdar the main leader of the republic. The Gilan SSR fell in 1921.
