Progenitor Virus
The ancient virus discovered in 1968 by Spencer, Ashford and Marcus that spawned Umbrella's biological weapons programme.
The Progenitor virus is the primordial viral strain discovered by Oswell E. Spencer, Edward Ashford and James Marcus in 1968, which led them to found Umbrella. It is the basis of Umbrella's bio-organic-weapons programme, as Marcus develops the t-virus from it. The virus's capacity to alter living organisms is the foundation of all subsequent Umbrella research, including the Tyrant Project and the creation of creatures like Hunters, Cerberuses, and the Neptune. Its discovery is the catalyst for the entire Resident Evil saga, as it provides the genetic blueprint for the t-virus and later derivatives like the G-virus.

Lore & Background
The Progenitor virus was discovered by Oswell E. Spencer, Edward Ashford and James Marcus in 1968, prompting them to found Umbrella as a front for continued research. James Marcus, appointed director of an executive training facility in the Arklay Mountains, developed the t-virus from Progenitor as the basis of Umbrella's bio-organic-weapons programme. He secretly experimented on trainees at the facility, creating a competing power centre within the corporation. Spencer then recruited Marcus's former students Albert Wesker and William Birkin to assassinate Marcus and appropriate his research, allowing Birkin to continue t-virus development at the Arklay laboratory. The virus's legacy is seen in every major outbreak, from the Mansion Incident to the fall of Raccoon City, as it provided the genetic blueprint that allowed Umbrella to create monsters like Tyrants, Hunters, and Cerberuses.
Reader's Guide
The Progenitor virus is the primordial strain from which the t-virus was developed by James Marcus. It is the basis of Umbrella's bio-organic-weapons programme, used to create Tyrants, Hunters, Cerberuses, and other B.O.W.s. The virus's capacity to alter living organisms is central to Umbrella's research. It is rarely used in its pure form; instead, scientists extract specific genetic markers to create stable derivatives like the t-virus. Only those with access to high-level Umbrella facilities could safely handle this substance, making it a highly guarded secret that eventually fueled global bioterrorism.
