The Oceania fantail ray can be distinguished by several characteristics, including the absence of a pair of bluish longitudinal stripes along the tail's sides, the absence of a dorsal fold but presence of a firm ridge on the upper margin of the tail, a relatively short post-orbital disc, and a uniformly pale ventral fold.
