Mumburarr whipray
A large whipray discovered via tapeworm research in northern Australia.
The mumburarr whipray (Urogymnus acanthobothrium) was formally identified as a distinct species in 2016. It lives in marine and brackish estuarine waters across northern Australia and southern Papua New Guinea, at depths between 2 and 60 meters. Its range includes the Arafura Sea near the Wessel Islands, rivers in Kakadu National Park, the Cambridge Gulf and Ord River in Western Australia, and the Gulf of Papua. This area overlaps with the porcupine ray and the freshwater whipray.
The ray can grow very large, up to 1.6 meters across. Compared to the related mangrove whipray, it has a longer snout and tail, and its snout is more angular. It lacks the white flecks on its upper surface and the black margin on its lower disc that the mangrove whipray has. Its upper side ranges from grey-white or grey-brown to yellow-brown; the holotype specimen was yellow-brown when first collected. Like the mangrove whipray, its tail is uniformly white past the sting, unlike other species in the genus.
The species was discovered through a parasite research project. The first tissue sample was taken in 1999 by scientists funded by the American National Science Foundation, who were studying fish tapeworms. More specimens were later collected under Australia’s National Environmental Research Program and by observers from Papua New Guinea’s National Fisheries Authority. The species was formally described in 2016.
The common name “mumburarr” comes from the Limilngan language of the Minitja people in the West Alligator River region, meaning “stingray.” It was chosen to acknowledge the help of native traditional landowners in finding specimens.
