Leopard whipray

The leopard whipray (Himantura leoparda) is a poorly understood stingray from the central Indo-West Pacific, ranging from the Andaman Sea to the Coral Triangle. It inhabits shallow, soft-bottomed coastal waters less than 70 meters deep. This ray can reach a width of 1.8 meters and has a diamond-shaped disc with a pointed snout and a very long, whip-like tail lacking fin folds. Adults display a leopard-like pattern of dark brown rings on a yellowish-brown background, along with a row of enlarged, heart-shaped denticles along the disc’s midline. Newborns and small juveniles have large, solid dark spots and few denticles. It is caught by fisheries across much of its range, mainly for its meat.

Historically, this species was confused with the reticulate whipray (H. uarnak) and the honeycomb whipray (H. undulata or H. fava), as all three are similar in size, shape, and color. It was formally described as distinct by Peter Last and Mabel Manjaji-Matsumoto in a 2008 CSIRO publication, with the name *leoparda* referring to its color pattern. The type specimen—a female 1.1 meters across—was collected from the Gulf of Carpentaria northwest of Weipa, Queensland. Genetic work later revealed that *H. leoparda* as originally defined contained a cryptic species, later described as *H. tutul*. Another common name is the undulate whipray. It belongs to a larger ‘uarnak’ species complex that also includes *H. australis*, *H. tutul*, *H. uarnak*, and *H. undulata*.

The leopard whipray has been reported from the Andaman Sea, across Southeast Asia including the Philippines, southern Japan and Taiwan, New Guinea, and northern Australia from Coral Bay to the Cape York Peninsula. It is bottom-dwelling, found inshore over soft substrates down to 70 meters. Reports from the Indian Ocean west of the Andaman Sea—including Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and South Africa—have not been genetically confirmed and may be misidentifications.

This large ray reaches 1.4 meters across and 4.1 meters in total length. Its diamond-shaped disc is wider than long and thick at the center, with narrowly rounded to angular outer corners. The leading edges are sinuous and converge to a broadly triangular snout with a protruding, pointed tip. In juveniles, the disc is nearly as long as wide. The eyes are small, followed by much larger, roughly rectangular spiracles.

The underside is uniformly white. The ray was thought to have two color morphs, but subsequent research showed these were distinct, reproductively isolated species: H. leoparda and H. tutul.

The leopard whipray is assessed as endangered by the IUCN. It is caught by fisheries in many parts of its range, primarily for meat, using bottom trawls, tangle nets, and longlines. In parts of Indonesia and probably elsewhere, it is heavily fished, and most individuals caught in eastern Indonesia are juveniles. Its natural history is poorly understood, partly due to historical confusion with other species. It presumably preys on crustaceans and small fishes. Like other stingrays, it is aplacental viviparous, with newborns measuring roughly 20 cm across. Males attain sexual maturity at 70–80 cm across. Known parasites include the tapeworms Parachristianella indonesiensis and P. baverstocki. Reported occurrences in the Indian Ocean west of the Andaman Sea have not been genetically validated and could be misidentifications.
