The bubble-tip anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor) is a sea anemone from the family Actiniidae. It lives across the tropical Indo-Pacific, including the Red Sea. Its common name comes from the bulb-shaped tips on its tentacles, which appear in one of its two growth forms depending on where in the water column it lives. Like several other anemones, it can host multiple species of anemonefish. These anemones come in several color morphs, such as rose, orange, red, and standard green. They can reach up to 30 centimeters in diameter. Most of their energy comes from sunlight through symbiotic zooxanthellae. They also get nutrients by filter feeding with their tentacles, or from waste and debris cleaned off their partner anemonefish. In return, the anemone gives the fish shelter and protection from predators. In the wild, larger adults with stringy, streaming tentacles are usually found alone in deeper, dimmer waters. Smaller, younger specimens tend to live in groups or colonies near the surface in bright light, and these are the ones that show the characteristic bulbous tentacle tips. The bulbs form based on factors like water flow, light, bacterial count, color, and whether the anemone is hosting fish. In home aquariums, medium flow and medium lighting are enough, provided the tank is mature enough to support anemones. This species is a generalist host for anemonefish, supporting 14 different species—about half of all known anemonefish. It does not host the others, likely due to competition, habitat preferences, or biochemical signals. Under proper care, the anemone can reproduce both sexually and asexually in captivity. However, insufficient lighting triggers a dangerous process called bleaching, in which the anemone expels its photosynthetic zooxanthellae, leading to progressive decline and eventual death. White or overly translucent specimens in the trade are likely already in various stages of this process and should be avoided. Beyond the aquarium, wild populations face growing pressure from climate change. Although the species is not currently listed on the IUCN Red List, projections suggest global temperatures could rise by 4.3 °C and seawater pH could drop by 0.3 units. Rising ocean temperatures are expected to cause widespread bleaching events, while elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide appears to have little direct effect on the anemone itself.
