History
Bertelsmann entered the music business in the 1950s by adding music to its book club, launching the Ariola record label and establishing the Sonopress pressing plant. Ariola opened a U.S. office in 1975. Bertelsmann acquired Arista Records in 1979 and half ownership of RCA Records in 1985, becoming one of the world's largest music companies. After fully acquiring RCA Records in 1987, Bertelsmann consolidated its subsidiaries into the Bertelsmann Music Group (BMG), covering folk, pop, and especially classical music. In 2003, declining music sales led Bertelsmann to merge its record label interests with Sony, forming Sony BMG. Bertelsmann sold BMG Music Publishing to Universal Music Group in 2006. Concluding that established music publishing and record labels were unsuitable for the digital era, Bertelsmann sold its Sony BMG stake in 2008, and the joint venture was renamed Sony Music Entertainment. In October 2008, Bertelsmann launched the new BMG with a small portfolio of about 200 artists retained from Sony BMG, adopting a business model focused on fairness, service, and transparency. The launch occurred during the 2008 financial crisis, within two weeks of Lehman Brothers' collapse. Since Bertelsmann could not supply the required funds alone, a 51% stake was sold to investment firm KKR in 2009, with Bertelsmann retaining 49% and management appointment rights. This transaction increased BMG's equity ratio. Initially focused on the European broadcast market, BMG expanded internationally after KKR became majority shareholder. A key step was acquiring Cherry Lane Music Publishing in 2009, giving BMG its first U.S. foothold. Further purchases in 2010 included Evergreen Copyright Acquisitions.
Corporate structure
BMG Nashville operates under BMG Rights Management GmbH, a German limited liability company focused on marketing, developing, and delivering music for media, concerts, and other uses. The company holds numerous subsidiaries, including BMG Rights Management (Europe) GmbH, and has a presence in Australia, Brazil, China, France, Italy, Spain, the UK, the Benelux countries, the United States, Canada, and Scandinavia. As of December 2025, BMG’s senior leadership includes CEO Thomas Coesfeld, CFO Mathis Wolter, CHRO Melanie McAllister, and COO Sebastian Hentzschel. In the 2018 financial year, BMG reported €545 million in revenue, with rights and licenses making up 91.1% and products and merchandise 8.9%. The United States generated nearly half of that revenue at 44.1%.
Business model
BMG bundles music publishing and label services under one roof using a single tech platform, a setup that sets it apart from bigger rivals. It has since branched into film, television, and books. Its publishing arm handles songwriters’ rights. The company also owns a large production music library for use in movies, TV, ads, and other media. That library includes catalogs like MusicDirector, Human Music, Music Beyond, X-Ray Dog, Beds & Beats, Valentino Production Music, Immediate Music, AXS Music, Altitude Music, and Must Save Jane.
