Development

The game was first leaked through an online marketing survey hinting at a sequel called "Rayman Origins 2" featuring dragons, vampires, ghosts, and the Land of the Livid Dead. Ubisoft later registered domain names including RaymanLegends.com. On 27 April 2012, a leaked trailer revealed new playable characters and online multiplayer, along with Wii U exclusive features using NFC to display figures on the touchscreen. Ubisoft confirmed development but stated the trailer was an internal demonstrative video not representing the final game.

The game was officially unveiled for Wii U at E3 2012, with Murfy as a playable demo character. Ubisoft senior game manager Michael Micholic said the company was considering PS3, Xbox 360, and PC versions, though a Gamescom 2012 trailer indicated Wii U exclusivity. Originally set for 30 November 2012 as a Wii U launch title, it was delayed on 8 October 2012. A demo released on the Wii U eShop on 13 December 2012, and the release date was set for 26 February 2013, then delayed again to September 2013 for simultaneous PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 releases.

This upset fans, who started a petition with over 11,000 signatures. Ubisoft promised another Wii U exclusive demo, which was negatively received. Developers expressed distaste for the delay, and creator Michel Ancel was photographed with protesters.

Reception

Rayman Legends received universal acclaim according to Metacritic. Edge gave it a 9/10, calling it one of the most jubilant and vividly imagined platformers in a long time. GamesRadar awarded 4.5 out of 5 stars, praising level variety and presentation while criticizing chaotic multiplayer and some touchscreen sections in solo play. Tom McShea of GameSpot rated it 9.0/10, commending the game mechanics, level design, and local co-op. Jose Otero of IGN gave a 9.5/10, praising gameplay and level design but noting the absence of online co-op. Danielle Riendeau of Polygon rated it 8.5/10, describing it as a beautifully designed gauntlet. Thomas Whitehead of Nintendo Life gave the Wii U version a 9/10, calling it close to perfection with minor missteps, and criticized the short length while noting the developers made those hours glorious.

Remake

It features a new 2.5D visual style, 3D segments, new levels, new minigames, a new soundtrack by Christophe Héral and Grant Kirkhope, and full voice acting with David Gasman as Rayman and Billy West as Murfy. The remake is set for release on 1 October 2026 for Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Rayman brand producer Loïc Gounon stated the remake was intended as a foundation for the franchise's future, and in a separate interview, said Ubisoft believed it might be time to return to more adventurous 3D Rayman games if everything goes well. The official Rayman Twitter account confirmed previous releases would remain available.
