A god game about manipulating nature to guide a tribe.
From Dust is a god video game designed by Éric Chahi and developed by Ubisoft Montpellier, released in 2011 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation Network, and Xbox Live Arcade. Described as a spiritual successor to Populous, the game tasks players with manipulating matter such as lava, soil, and water to help a tribe recover lost knowledge. Story
The story follows a tribe that has lost the knowledge of their ancestors, the Ancients, and finds itself in unknown territory. They summon a force called the Breath, controlled by the player, hoping it will help them communicate with nature. The Breath guides the tribe to totems, where they perform rituals and build villages, unlocking passages to new lands. After overcoming natural disasters across various islands, the tribe follows the path of the Ancients but cannot find their lands. On the final island, players place a totem and shape the island themselves. After the final ritual, the island collapses and sinks, leaving only a passageway above sea level. The tribe passes through and realizes they have returned to the first island where they began. The narrator closes with the words: 'And here we are, as on the first day.'
Development
Ubisoft revealed From Dust, then codenamed Project Dust, at E3 in June 2010, with Éric Chahi serving as Creative Designer. The game was pitched as a spiritual successor to Populous and built using Ubisoft's LyN engine. Chahi compared the experience to a sandcastle game, but with lava and other natural forces. In August 2010, during Gamescom and the European Game Developers Conference, Ubisoft demonstrated the physics engine through technical footage, and Chahi delivered a lecture on crafting a high-performance simulation of a dynamic natural world.
The digital-only release was chosen partly to cut distribution and manufacturing costs, and partly to keep creative options open for future additions like a world editor or multiplayer. Producer Guillaume Bunier noted that while some players would be unable to access it, the core audience would be on PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, and Steam. He added that a disc-based version could appear if the game proved a major success. From Dust launched on Xbox 360 in July 2011, followed by Windows in August 2011, PlayStation Network in September 2011, and Google Chrome in May 2012.
Reception
From Dust received generally favourable reviews, with Metacritic scores of 76 for PC, 80 for PlayStation 3, and 81 for Xbox 360. Populous creator Peter Molyneux had a good impression of the game. Critics praised the controls as simple, intuitive, and smooth, though some noted the cursor could be fidgety and imprecise. The simulation was acclaimed for allowing free terrain modification and multiple solutions, encouraging creativity and being called a true sandbox game, though some critics noted the lack of a free sandbox mode or found the manipulation mechanic boring. Visuals were praised, with natural disaster scenes described as breathtaking and stunning, and the overall presentation called gorgeous, ethereal, and occasionally menacing. The game's sense of scale impressed reviewers, and some compared its visuals to the work of French cartoonist Jean Giraud.
