Angry Birds Blast (written as Angry Birds Blast!) is a free-to-play tile-matching puzzle game. It was created by developer MYBO and released by Rovio Entertainment in 2016 as part of the Angry Birds series. The game adapts the Angry Birds brand into a tile-matching puzzle format, moving away from the franchise’s usual physics-based slingshot mechanics.
In gameplay, players clear balloons from the board by matching groups of at least two adjoining balloons of the same color. Each level has specific objectives, such as popping bird-shaped balloons or pigs, clearing bubbles, or making a path for a hot air balloon to rise to the top. The board can also include wood and glass panels as obstacles. Clearing larger groups of balloons earns power-ups: a rocket clears a row or column (for five balloons), a bomb clears a larger area (for seven), and a laser removes all balloons of one color (for nine or more). Boosters, including extra moves and attacks, can be bought with silver coins earned during play or with gold coins purchased through microtransactions.
Reception was mixed. Macworld called it a "decent game" that offered a better attempt at bringing the Angry Birds brand to color-matching puzzles than other spin-offs, but found it "uninspiring" due to its similarity to freemium puzzle games like Candy Crush Saga. Phone Arena said the game was enjoyable and tricky even with in-app purchases, but dismissed it as a "generic balloon popping game" with Angry Birds theming.
Blast! later had a sequel, Angry Birds Blast Island, also developed by MYBO. It soft-launched in select countries in early 2018 but was shut down in June 2019. A spin-off, Angry Birds Dream Blast, came out in November 2018. It features younger versions of Red, Chuck, and Bomb as they appear in The Angry Birds Movie, and uses ball physics instead of the tile-matching mechanics of its predecessors.
