Richie Dalmau
Puerto Rican basketball player and founder of Sueño de Hormiga.
Raymond "Richie" Dalmau, born in 1973 in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, is a retired basketball player and the oldest child of the legendary Raymond Dalmau. He launched his pro career in 1991 with the Capitanes de Arecibo, coached by his father, and switched the following season to the Piratas de Quebradillas—the same team his father had played for. While with Quebradillas, Dalmau rose to stardom and earned a place on the Puerto Rican National Team in 1995, where he continues to serve as a backup point guard. His international appearances include the 1996 Olympics and the 1998 and 2002 World Tournaments. He reached the Puerto Rican League Finals in 1999 and 2000, losing both to the Cangrejeros de Santurce, but was named the league’s Most Outstanding Player in 2001. In 2002, he played in the NBA Development League for the Fayetteville Patriots and the Roanoke Dazzle. After Quebradillas faced financial troubles and lost its players’ rights in 2003, Dalmau and his brother Ricardo moved to the Indios de Mayaguez. For the 2005 season, the Dalmau brothers signed with the Cangrejeros de Santurce, coached by their father Raymond, and together they won their first league championship in 2007. Richie then re-signed with Santurce for three more years. He has two younger brothers, Christian and Ricardo, who also play in the BSN. Off the court, Dalmau founded the rock band Sueño de Hormiga, in which he plays guitar and served as executive producer for its first CD, released in 2008. He has also worked to improve Puerto Rico’s public education system, joining his brother Ricardo in 2008 for Sapientis Week, a program that brings prominent figures into classrooms to highlight the education crisis.
