Background
Raymond Gause's arrival on the Puerto Rican National Team in 1988 marked the start of the program's best four-year run. That year, he was recruited as a three-point shooter and specialist, immediately becoming the starting shooting guard. His first task was the 1988 Tournament of the Americas Olympic Qualifier in Montevideo, Uruguay, where he helped Puerto Rico qualify for the Seoul Olympics. In 1989, he helped the team win gold at the Tournament of the Americas in Mexico City and then led Puerto Rico to a gold medal victory over Panama at the Centro Basket Tournament in Havana, Cuba. The 1990 FIBA World Championship in Buenos Aires saw Puerto Rico arrive undefeated at 7-0 after disposing of Yugoslavia, USA, and Australia, only to lose its last two games in the medal round to the Soviet Union and Team USA, finishing fourth. In 1991, Gause led Puerto Rico to gold medals at the Centro Basket Tournament in Monterrey, Mexico, and the Pan American Games in Havana, Cuba. In the gold medal game against Mexico, he scored 25 points with seven three-point baskets—the only Pan American gold Puerto Rico basketball has ever won. He closed his international career at the 1992 Tournament of the Americas in Portland, Oregon, the first international event allowing NBA players, helping Puerto Rico qualify for the Barcelona Olympics.
