Ángel Figueroa

Puerto Rican forward, BSN star and national team member.

Ángel Luis "Buster" Figueroa Sepúlveda (born October 13, 1981) is a Puerto Rican professional basketball player currently with the Capitanes De Arecibo in the BSN. He debuted in Puerto Rico’s top league in 1999 with the Guaynabo Mets, earning Rookie of the Year honors after averaging 15.4 points per game. Traded to Arecibo in 2001, he became a multiple-time All-Star. During the 2001–2002 season, while playing for Dowling College, he led NCAA Division II in scoring nationwide. In 2005, he helped Arecibo capture the BSN championship, averaging 19.0 points per game, and was named Finals MVP after scoring 33 points with 22 rebounds in the decisive game against the Carolina Giants. He led the league in scoring in 2006 (20.7 points per game) and again in 2007 (24.6 points per game), earning another All-Star selection. In 2008, he finished second in scoring (21.5 points per game), started the All-Star game after receiving the most fan votes, and was named the BSN’s Most Outstanding Player; he also placed second in MVP voting with 27 votes. That year, Arecibo won its third franchise championship, with Figueroa again earning Finals MVP honors. In the off-season, he played a single game for Dinamo Basket Sassari in Italy’s LegADue, recording 21 points and 5 rebounds.

In 2009, Figueroa joined the Lobos Grises UAD of Mexico’s LNBP. He debuted on October 1 with 21 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 steals. Over his first week, he totaled 34 points, 15 rebounds, and 3 steals against Soles and Potros, then scored 18 points in two straight games before a season-low 10 points. Later, he posted 21 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals against Panteras, and 16 points in a game where he recorded his first game without a steal. On October 29, he notched his first double-double (21 points, 10 rebounds) against Abejas, and closed the month with 22 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 steals. After a two-week break, he returned with 11 and 12 points in consecutive games while grabbing 17 rebounds, then scored 21 points with 7 rebounds against Barreteros. In his final November game, he had 20 points, 8 rebounds, and a steal.

Figueroa played for the Puerto Rico national team in 2006, winning a gold medal at the Central American and Caribbean Games with an undefeated record. He was also selected for the 2006 FIBA World Championship but missed the tournament due to injury. In June 2008, national team officials announced he did not have a guaranteed spot, citing a new focus on height. That same year, he rejoined Arecibo for the FIBA Americas League, scoring 20 points, 8 rebounds, and a steal against Pioneros; 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals against Merengueros; and a tournament-high 26 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 steals in the final game.
