Federico López
Puerto Rican point guard and FIBA All-Tournament Team member.
Federico López Camacho, widely called Fico López, was a professional basketball player for Puerto Rico. Born in Mexico City to Cuban parents, he played for the Mets de Guaynabo from 1981 to 1997, winning multiple Puerto Rican league titles alongside his brother-in-law Mario Morales. Though born in Mexico, he represented Puerto Rico internationally, competing in the 1986, 1990, and 1994 FIBA World Championships, as well as the 1988 and 1992 Olympics. At the 1990 World Championship, he led the tournament in assists, earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team, and helped Puerto Rico achieve its best finish, fourth place, after a two-point loss to the United States in the bronze medal game. López died at age 44 in Guaynabo from an apparent heart attack while playing volleyball at the Caparra Country Club, a court that bears his name.
