Central Papua is an Indonesian province in the central region of Western New Guinea, formally established on 25 July 2022 from eight former regencies of Papua province.[1] It covers 61,079.59 km² and had an estimated population of 1,492,290 in mid 2025.[2] Wanggar District in Nabire Regency serves as the location for the administrative capital, but Timika, situated in Mimika Regency, has a larger population.[3]

Geography and history

The province was formally created when President Joko Widodo passed Law Number 15 of Year 2022 on 25 July 2022.[4] The capital location in Nabire was chosen after debate, with Mimika and Puncak regencies favoring Timika while six other regencies wanted Nabire.[5][6] The area is traditionally called Mee Pago – Saireri, and the province's boundaries generally align with that cultural region.[3][7] In the interior, ethnic groups like the Mee (also called Ekari) and Moni traditionally engage in tuber cultivation, pig raising, and fishing for their livelihood.[8]

Western explorers from the British Ornithologists' Union expedition, which took place from 1909 to 1911, were the first outsiders to encounter these communities.[8] While flying over the highlands in the 1930s, Dutch pilot Frits Wissel spotted three large lakes that were home to the Mee people.[8]

What the cited sources add

The Mee tribe's traditional emawa house is built on stilts with three sections: an attic, a middle room with a bed and fire pit, and the ground level beneath.[9][10] Cooperation among the Kamoro villages arose from a local shortage of sago, and they used canoes and firearms, obtained through trade, to intimidate more fertile areas.[11][12] Puncak Jaya was first climbed in 1936 by the Carstensz expedition under the leadership of Anton Colijn, and during this expedition, geologist Jean Jacques Dozy identified substantial copper deposits at a site that would later be called Ertsberg.[13][14] Freeport Indonesia's projects included the construction of Amamapare Port within the Kamoro Tribe's territory and the establishment of the Kuala Kencana settlement, which was finished in 1995.[13][14]
