East Nusa Tenggara is an Indonesian province known for its natural environment, parks, and rich marine ecosystem that attracts divers.[1] The province had a population of about 5.74 million by mid-2025, with Kupang City as its capital.[2][3] It is one of the two Indonesian provinces where Roman Catholicism is the predominant religion.[1]

Geography and history

Evidence from excavations indicates that human occupation of Liang Bua cave in East Nusa Tenggara began approximately 190,000 years in the past.[4] Within that cave's archaeological strata, remains of early humans, specifically Homo floresiensis, were discovered.[4] Following Indonesia's 1945 proclamation of independence, the State of East Indonesia was established in the country's eastern region.[5] A total of twenty-one regencies plus one independent city, Kupang, make up the province's administrative divisions.[6]

The economy is primarily characterized by subsistence agriculture, with corn and coffee being the principal crops.[7] In coastal and island zones, seaweed cultivation represents one of the most rapidly expanding economic activities.[8]

What the cited sources add

A 2012 Jakarta Post article reports that the decline in civet and bat populations in West Manggarai has hampered the natural distribution of sugar palm seeds.[9] The same document expresses hope that East Nusa Tenggara can contribute to the Indonesia Emas vision of 2045.[10] A 2011 TNP2K publication identifies East Nusa Tenggara as being among Indonesia's most impoverished provinces.[11] Restricted access to fundamental resources and services is caused by the region's dry climate and its geography of isolated islands.[12]

Poor families receive support through government-initiated social aid, including the Family Hope Program and Non-Cash Food Assistance.[13]
