Moonspell is a Portuguese gothic metal band that formed in 1989. Their first release was the EP *Under the Moonspell* in 1994, and their debut album, *Wolfheart*, came out the following year. The band quickly rose to become Portugal’s most prominent metal act and a major force in gothic metal. In Portugal, they found significant success with their 1998 album *Sin/Pecado*. Later, with *Memorial* (2006), they became the first Portuguese metal band to earn a Gold certification for an album. Moonspell also maintains a strong following in Germany, where their albums regularly appear on the Top 100 Chart.
The group began playing in 1989 under the name Morbid God, but settled on Moonspell in 1992 after releasing the promo track "Serpent Angel." At that time, the lineup included vocalist Fernando Ribeiro (Langsuyar), bassist João Pedro "Ares" Escoval (Tetragrammaton), guitarists Duarte Picoto (Mantus) and Luís Lamelas (Malah), and drummer Miguel "Mike" Gaspar (Nisroth). Ribeiro and Ares founded the band, while the others joined at different points in 1992, with Gaspar coming in after "Serpent Angel" was recorded. On 24 February 1993, they released the demo *Anno Satanæ*, featuring three songs plus an intro and outro. Keyboardist Pedro Paixão joined in September 1993, and the band played their first show on 6 November in Charneca, Lisbon. Shortly after, Lamelas was fired and replaced by guitarist João Pereira (Tanngrisnir). The demo caught the attention of independent label Adipocere Records, which signed them for a mini-album. On 27 April 1994, they released *Under the Moonspell* and toured Portugal to promote it, aiming for a bigger label. Soon after, they signed a six-album deal with Century Media Records.
For *Wolfheart*, recorded in Germany with producer Waldemar Sorychta and released on 1 April 1995, the band saw lineup changes. By June, João Pereira struggled balancing the band’s breakthrough with his day job, and Ricardo Amorim was asked to join on 13 June. Earlier, Ricardo had been approached to fill in for João on some shows, but that fell through when João got another chance. In July, Moonspell played their first shows outside Portugal, three in the United Kingdom. In September, they embarked on a European tour supporting Morbid Angel. Duarte Picoto could not join due to personal issues, so the band played as a five-piece, with Ricardo as the sole guitar
