Castorocauda is an extinct genus of docodont mammaliaforms from the Middle to Late Jurassic, known from a single species, *C. lutrasimilis*. Discovered in the Daohugou Beds of Inner Mongolia, China, it is the largest known Jurassic mammaliaform and the earliest known with aquatic adaptations and a fur pelt. Its discovery helped disprove the hypothesis that mammaliaforms remained evolutionarily stagnant until the end of the Mesozoic.
The holotype specimen, JZMP04117, was unearthed from the Jiulongshan Formation, dating to roughly 159–164 million years ago. It includes a partial skeleton with an incomplete skull, well-preserved lower jaws, most ribs, limbs, pelvis, and tail, along with traces of soft tissue and hair. The genus name combines Latin *Castor* ("beaver") and *cauda* ("tail"), referencing its presumed beaver-like tail, while the species name *lutrasimilis* derives from *lutra* ("otter") and *similis* ("similar"), noting similarities in teeth and vertebrae to modern otters.
Castorocauda was the largest known docodont, surpassing earlier Jurassic mammaliaforms like *Sinoconodon*. Its teeth curved backward to grip slippery prey, resembling those of seals and Eocene whales. The first two molars interlocked during biting, a derived trait. The lower jaw held four incisors, one canine, five premolars, and six molars. Its forelimbs closely matched those of the modern platypus, with a widening humerus, enlarged epicondyles, and robust finger bones, suggesting both burrowing and rowing capabilities. Soft tissue between the toes indicated webbed hind feet, and a spur on the hind ankle resembled the venomous spur of male platypuses. The tail vertebrae were flattened and shaped like an "H" from above, similar to beavers and otters, aiding in paddling. Fur preserved on the tail was fifty percent wider than the pelvis, with guard hairs, scales, and sparse hair distribution akin to beaver tails. This fur, the earliest known pelt, confirms that fur was an ancestral mammalian trait and implies a well-developed neocortex. Castorocauda lived in a wet, seasonal, cool temperate environment alongside salamanders, pterosaurs, birdlike dinosaurs, and other mammaliaforms.

Traces of soft tissue between the toes suggest webbed hind feet, and the holotype preserves a spur on the hind ankle, similar to the venomous spur of male platypuses. The tail vertebrae were flattened dorsoventrally, with each centrum bearing two pairs of transverse processes on the headward side and one on the tailward side, giving the centrum an H-shaped appearance from above—an anatomy like that of beavers and otters, used for paddling. Fur was preserved on the holotype, the earliest known pelt, with the tail fur outline 50% wider than the pelvis; the first quarter of the tail had guard hairs, the middle half was mostly scaly with little hair, and the last quarter had scales with some guard hair, a pattern very similar to that of beavers. The ribs were plated on their proximal margins, possibly to increase the insertion area of the iliocostalis muscle and better support the torso, a trait seen in arboreal and burrowing xenarthrans. Castorocauda likely had 14 thoracic, 7 lumbar, 3 sacral, and 25 tail vertebrae.
