Anchiornis is a genus of small, four-winged paravian dinosaurs from the Late Jurassic, known from hundreds of fossils found only in the Tiaojishan Formation of Liaoning, China. The only known species is *Anchiornis huxleyi*, named for its similarity to modern birds and in honor of Thomas Henry Huxley. It became the first Mesozoic dinosaur species for which almost the entire life appearance could be determined, providing important information on the early evolution of birds.

The first fossil, a partial skeleton missing the skull and part of the tail, was discovered in the Yaolugou area of Jianchang County and described by paleontologist Xu Xing in 2009. A second, more complete specimen from the nearby Daxishan area preserved long wing feathers on the arms, legs, and feet, confirming it was a four-winged dinosaur similar to *Microraptor*. Hundreds of additional specimens have since been identified, including a nearly complete skeleton with a feathered head crest used to reconstruct the animal’s life coloration, and another that allowed a scanning electron microscope study of feather microstructure and melanosome color.
