Carnosauria is an extinct group of carnivorous theropod dinosaurs that lived during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. Historically considered largely synonymous with Allosauroidea, some recent studies have revived Carnosauria as a clade including both Allosauroidea and Megalosauroidea, encompassing the majority of non-coelurosaurian members of the theropod clade Tetanurae. Other researchers have found Allosauroidea and Megalosauroidea to be unrelated groups, and the composition of Carnosauria remains controversial.
The group was once used as a catch-all for any large theropod, even including non-dinosaurs like the rauisuchian *Teratosaurus*. This made the group polyphyletic, sharing few features beyond size. Reanalysis in the late twentieth century reclassified many former carnosaurs—such as megalosaurids, spinosaurids, and ceratosaurs—as more primitive theropods, while tyrannosaurids were placed in Coelurosauria due to their closer relation to birds. Modern cladistics defines Carnosauria as tetanurans sharing a more recent common ancestor with *Allosaurus* than with modern birds.
Carnosaurs are distinguished by large eye sockets, a long narrow skull, and a femur longer than the tibia. Their skulls are typically about two and a half to three times longer than tall, with serrated, flat teeth bearing equally sized denticles on both edges. The cranial vault volume ranges from about 95 milliliters in *Sinraptor* to 250 milliliters in *Giganotosaurus*. The pelvis features a triangular pubic boot, and the chevron bases on the tail have anterior and posterior bone growth. The hind limb and pelvis are structured to reduce stress across body sizes, with the femur’s inclination lowering bending and torsion. The caudofemoralis longus muscle, which flexes the tail, is proportionally smaller in larger carnosaurs. Body length from tail to hip is between 54% and 62% of total length, and head to hip between 38% and 46%. The largest carnosaurs reached about 10 meters in length, scaling limbs similarly to other large theropods like tyrannosaurids.
