Boverisuchus is an extinct genus of planocraniid crocodyliforms known from the early to middle Eocene (Ypresian to Lutetian stages) of Germany and western North America. It was a relatively small crocodyliform with an estimated total length of approximately 2.2–3.6 metres (7.2–11.8 ft). The genus was first named in 1938 by paleontologist Oskar Kuhn, who designated the type species *Boverisuchus magnifrons* from the Lutetian of Germany, alongside a similar form he called *Weigeltisuchus geiseltalensis*. For many years, most paleontologists considered both of these species to be junior synonyms of *Pristichampsus rollinatii*. However, a 2013 revision by Brochu determined that the material for *P. rollinatii* was insufficiently diagnostic, rendering that name a *nomen dubium*, and reinstated *Boverisuchus* as a valid genus. In the same study, Brochu assigned *Crocodylus vorax* (long referred to as *Pristichampsus vorax* since Langston, 1975) as a second species, *Boverisuchus vorax*. Brochu also noted that material from the middle Eocene of Italy and Texas might represent an additional, unnamed species. Two Asian species of the genus *Planocrania* were found to be the closest relatives of *Boverisuchus* in phylogenetic analyses, leading to the reinstatement of the family Planocraniidae to contain these genera. Like other planocraniids, *Boverisuchus* is thought to have possessed heavily armored skin and long limbs suited for a running, or cursorial, lifestyle. Its hoof-like toes indicate a primarily terrestrial existence, where it likely hunted mammals. Its teeth were ziphodont—laterally compressed, sharp, and serrated—a feature common in land-dwelling crocodyliforms that cannot drown their prey. These teeth were so similar to those of theropod dinosaurs that they were initially mistaken for them, leading some paleontologists to believe non-avian dinosaurs had survived the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event. The tail was round in cross-section and lacked the osteoderm crest seen in modern crocodiles, more closely resembling a dinosaur’s tail, and the animal was likely capable of galloping.
