Background
Zack and his close friends Kimberly Hart, Jason Lee Scott, Billy Cranston and Trini Kwan were chosen by Zordon as the five original Power Rangers to defend Earth from Rita Repulsa. Adam Park later took over as the Black Ranger.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
Zack Taylor was selected by Zordon as one of the five original Power Rangers, alongside Kimberly Hart, Jason Lee Scott, Billy Cranston, and Trini Kwan, to defend Earth from Rita Repulsa. After time travel, he became the Black Ranger, wielding the Mastodon Power Coin and Dinozord. Quick-witted and clever, Zack combines skill, strength, and agility in battle. He is energetic, charismatic, and fun-loving, enjoying athletics, dancing, parties, and girls. His best friend is Jason. Zack is extremely confident but has fears of snakes, spiders, and insects, though he overcame his snake fear over time. He created his own fighting style, Hip Hop kido, blending dance-like moves with powerful strikes. Resourceful, his cunning often led the team to victory, such as when he found a way to defeat the Knasty Knight. He also became close friends with Tommy Oliver and advised Tommy on romance.
Reception
The choice of color for the Black Ranger (Zack Taylor) and Yellow Ranger (Trini Kwan) has been criticized, as some believe these colors represent their racial backgrounds. Parodies have illustrated perceived inherent racism in the show. Producers stated this was not noticed until the tenth episode. Walter Emanuel Jones claimed in 2025 that he chose the suit himself because he thought it looked cool. He and Thuy Trang noticed the racial color connection but felt it did not matter, hoping their characters would entertain the audience. Jones said he was often told he was a positive influence on fans.
