Tiago played in five of Europe's major leagues: Portugal, England, France, Italy and Spain. He spent eight seasons with Atlético Madrid, winning five major titles including the 2013–14 La Liga and the 2012 Europa League. A Portugal international on 66 occasions, he represented the nation in two World Cups and Euro 2004. He later worked briefly as a manager.

The stadium is half-empty, a friendly in late autumn. The floodlights hum. Mendes stands in the middle third, hands on his hips, watching the opposition build from the back. He does not run. He does not shout. He simply shifts his weight to the left foot, takes a two-touch pass that threads between two pressing midfielders, and by the time the camera pans to him, he is already scanning the next phase. Born in Viana do Castelo, Tiago began at Vianense, then Braga, before moving to Benfica. He later played for Chelsea, Lyon, Juventus, and Atlético Madrid. He scored his first international goal on 28 March 2007 against Serbia. He retired from the national team after the 2010 World Cup, but returned briefly in 2014–15.

• Tiago helped Braga finish fourth in 2001, qualifying for the UEFA Cup.
• He scored a career-best 13 goals in his first full season at Benfica.
