Vítor Baía

Vítor Manuel Martins Baía, OIH, born 15 October 1969, was a Portuguese goalkeeper whose career was built around Porto. He joined the club’s youth system at age 13 from Leça, made his first-team debut against Vitória de Guimarães, and held the starting spot for seven straight seasons, winning five league titles and two Taça de Portugal while conceding just 116 goals. In 1989, he skipped the FIFA World Youth Championship to keep his place ahead of Józef Młynarczyk as Porto chased the league title, finishing second. His peak came between 1994 and 1996, earning a spot in the ESM Team of the Year and ranking sixth then fifth in the IFFHS World’s Best Goalkeeper voting. After Euro 1996, he moved to Barcelona for a world-record fee for a goalkeeper.

At Barcelona, Baía missed only one league match in his first season, finishing second in La Liga and winning the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, but knee problems plagued his spell. When Louis van Gaal replaced Bobby Robson, Baía lost his place to Ruud Hesp and was loaned back to Porto mid-season. He returned to Porto permanently in January 1999, wearing the number 99 jersey, which sold well and boosted attendance. After another knee injury in 1999–2000 required surgery, he was released by Barcelona and rejoined Porto. Following a year sidelined, he returned in a reserves match against Vila Real in November 2001, then played in the cup against Santa Clara sixteen days later, earning a spot in the 2002 World Cup squad.

Baía regained top form in 2002–03, helping Porto win the league, cup, and UEFA Cup, saving a penalty in the semi-final against Lazio and playing in the final against Celtic. The next season, he played every minute of Porto’s Champions League campaign, beating Monaco 3–0 in the final, and was named UEFA Club Best Goalkeeper of the Year, the first Portuguese to win that award. Despite this, he was controversially omitted from Portugal’s Euro 2004 squad in favour of Ricardo.

In 2005–06, he lost his starting role to Brazilian Helton under coach Co Adriaanse, but remained part of the squad that won another league title. His final league start, his 700th official appearance, came in a 4–1 win over Aves. He retired at nearly 38 in June 2007, becoming Porto’s director of public relations until July 2010. Baía and Italian Stefano Tacconi are the only goalkeepers to have won all three major UEFA club competitions.

Internationally, Baía debuted for Portugal in a 1–0 friendly win over the United States in December 1990, earning 80 caps through 2002. He played every match at Euro 1996 and Euro 2000 (missing one game after qualification was secured), and all games at the 2002 World Cup. At Euro 2000, he saved a penalty from Arif Erdem in a 2–0 quarter-final win over Turkey. After the 2002 World Cup, coach António Oliveira was sacked, and his replacement Luiz Felipe Scolari dropped Baía, never recalling him despite press calls for his return. In 2004, Baía and his wife Alexandra founded a charity bearing his name to support underprivileged children and troubled teens, and he donated a pair of autographed items.
