Vítor Baía
Porto legend and Champions League-winning goalkeeper.
Vítor Manuel Martins Baía, OIH (born 15 October 1969) is a Portuguese former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. His career was intimately connected with Porto, which he started representing still in his teens, helping it to 26 titles and eventually remaining with the club in an ambassadorial role. Also having played for Barcelona, Baía appeared with the Portugal national team in two European Championships and the 2002 World Cup.

Born in Vila Nova de Gaia, Porto District, Baía joined Porto's youth ranks at 13 from Leça. He made his first-team debut against Vítoria de Guimarães and did not lose his starting place for seven seasons, winning five leagues and two Taça de Portugal. He was transferred to Barcelona after Euro 1996 for the highest amount paid for a goalkeeper in the world. After a loan back to Porto, he returned to Barcelona in 2000, was immediately released, and signed again with Porto. He won the UEFA Champions League in 2003–04 and was selected as UEFA Club Best Goalkeeper of the Year. He retired at nearly 38 on 14 June 2007.
In Their Own Story
The floodlights at the Estádio da Luz hummed with a low electric buzz, the kind that vibrates in your molars. It was a midweek league night, the kind where the attendance is thin and the opposition is not the one the crowd came for. But the crowd was there, because Baía was in goal, and that was enough.
Seventy-three minutes. The opposing striker had just cut inside the last defender, and the whole stadium held its breath. Baía came out, not far, just enough to narrow the angle. He dropped to one knee, one hand flat on the wet grass, and the striker struck. The ball hit the goalkeeper's glove, not the pad, the leather, and Baía flung it wide with a grunt that carried to the upper tier. He got up, spat, and turned to his centre-backs. "Next one, same story."
The next one was not the same story. But no one in the stands would have blamed him. He had already given them the seventy-three minutes, and that was the deal.
