Chell
The silent protagonist of Portal and Portal 2.
Chell is the silent protagonist of Valve's Portal series, the player character of Portal and Portal 2 and a supporting character in a few other games. Little is established about her, though some fans suggest she is the daughter of an Aperture Science employee. In the first game she works through test chambers in the Aperture Science Enrichment Center with the handheld portal device, taunted by the AI GLaDOS and promised cake at the end, and later escapes into the facility's maintenance areas; she can pick up weighted storage cubes to climb or to hold down the large buttons that open doors.
Her face and body model came from Alésia Glidewell and were redesigned for Portal 2. Erik Wolpaw said her silence suited the game's humour, making her a straight man in a world gone mad, and Chet Faliszek described her as the female counterpart of Half-Life's silent Gordon Freeman. She is seen only in first person, apart from glimpses of her model through the portals, and has been praised as a female lead who is not sexualized.
