Turret
Aperture's lethal sentry robots.
Turrets are the automated sentry guns of the Aperture Science facility and one of the hazards that can kill Chell in Portal, alongside energy pellets, toxic liquid, falling objects and crushing machinery. In Portal 2 the player must disable the sentient, lethal turrets or stay out of their line of sight; Chell and Wheatley sabotage Aperture's turret production, and Wheatley's own franken-turret cubes prove useless at solving tests. Ellen McLain voices them, and a sultry take she recorded while Valve was searching for the turret voice became the basis for GLaDOS's final voice instead.
An early Portal 2 script had Chell meet a lost tribe of turrets seeking their Animal King, and a turret in the finished game refers to the Prometheus myth. Fans make plush and papercraft turrets, and Bastion's Windows release added a weapon inspired by Portal 2's turrets and Conversion Gel, with new turret lines recorded by McLain.
