Katy Perry, born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, is an American singer, songwriter and television personality known for her impact on pop music and her camp style, which led Vogue and Rolling Stone to call her the Queen of Camp. She broke through with the pop rock album One of the Boys (2008) and its chart-topping single "I Kissed a Girl". With estimated sales above 151 million records, she ranks among the best-selling music artists ever, and she was the first artist to have several videos pass one billion views on YouTube.
Lore & Background
Perry was born on October 25, 1984, in Santa Barbara, California, to Pentecostal pastors, and grew up moving around the country as her parents founded churches. Secular music was discouraged at home, so she heard pop through CDs smuggled from friends. She began vocal training at nine, sang in church until 17, got her first guitar at 13, and finished her GED at 15 before leaving Dos Pueblos High School.
Musicians Steve Thomas and Jennifer Knapp brought her to Nashville to sharpen her songwriting. Her gospel debut Katy Hudson came out on March 6, 2001, on Red Hill Records but sold poorly. After moving to Los Angeles she signed with Capitol Records.
