Exo (stylized in all caps; Korean: 엑소) is a South Korean-Chinese boy band formed by SM Entertainment in 2011 and debuting the following year. Based in Seoul, the group now has nine members: Xiumin, Suho, Lay, Baekhyun, Chen, Chanyeol, D.O., Kai, and Sehun. They are known for releasing songs and performing in Korean, Mandarin, and Japanese. Fans and media often call them the "Kings of K-pop."

2022–present: Debut anniversary
Originally twelve members, Exo debuted split into two sub-units: Exo-K (Suho, Baekhyun, Chanyeol, D.O., Kai, Sehun) and Exo-M (Xiumin, Lay, Chen, Luhan, Kris, Tao). In 2014 and 2015, Kris, Luhan, and Tao left the group one by one following legal disputes with SM Entertainment. Until their third EP Overdose (2014), Exo-K and Exo-M performed in Korean and Mandarin respectively.

After that, Exo has performed as a single group, though their music still often includes multiple languages. In 2016, Chen, Baekhyun, and Xiumin formed the sub-unit Exo-CBX; in 2019, Sehun and Chanyeol started promoting as Exo-SC. All members also pursue solo careers in music, film, and television.

Their first studio album, XOXO (2013), came with the hit single "Growl." Critics praised it, and together with its repackage it sold over a million copies—the first Korean act to do so in twelve years. Later Korean studio albums and their repackages each also sold over a million copies. Don't Mess Up My Tempo (2018), their sixth studio album, reached number 23 on the US Billboard 200, their highest position there. Their eighth studio album, Exist (2023), is their best-selling in South Korea, with over two million copies sold.

Philanthropy
Exo has won many awards, including five straight Album of the Year prizes at the MAMA Awards and two consecutive Artist of the Year awards at the Melon Music Awards. They have performed more than 100 concerts across four headlining tours and several joint tours. From 2014 to 2018, they ranked among the top five most influential celebrities on the Forbes Korea Power Celebrity 40 list. The Korea Tourism Organization has called them the "Nation's Pick." Beyond music, members have endorsed brands like Nature Republic and Samsung and take part in charity work, including Smile For U, a joint project by SM Entertainment and UNICEF that started in 2015.

Lore & Background
Since then, Exo have exclusively performed as one group, though their music continues to feature multiple languages. All members also maintain individual careers in music, film and television. Their subsequent Korean studio albums combined with repackages each sold over one million copies.
The Creative Engine Behind the Song
Behind "Mama" sat a remarkably concentrated creative team. Yoo Young-jin shouldered an extraordinary range of responsibilities: he produced the track, composed and arranged it, wrote the Korean lyrics, directed the vocals, sang background vocals, and handled both recording and mixing. Wang Yajun contributed the Chinese lyrics, ensuring the Mandarin version felt native rather than translated. Three additional background vocalists—Koo Bon-soo, Kim Bum-jin, and Kim Jung-hyun—layered the harmonies.
At the production level, Lee Soo-man served as producer while SM Entertainment held the executive producer credit, and Kim Young-min oversaw as executive supervisor. The technical chain ran through SM Booming System for recording and mixing, Sonic Korea for mastering, and Jeon Hoon handled the final mastering pass. The result was a debut single that carried the fingerprints of a tightly knit, in-house creative operation.
The Blitz of Launch Performances
The weeks surrounding "Mama"'s release were a relentless schedule of televised debuts across two countries. On April 7, 2012, Exo-M stepped onto the stage of China's 12th Yinyue Fengyun Bang Awards for their television premiere, performing the Mandarin "Mama." That same evening, Exo-K made their Korean television debut on SBS's Inkigayo, where they performed both "Mama" and a prologue single titled "History." The Korean showcase then cascaded through the following week: Mnet's M Countdown on April 12, KBS's Music Bank on April 13, and MBC's Show! Music Core on April 14. In just five days, the group had appeared on every major Korean music broadcast, while their Chinese counterparts had already anchored a national awards show. The density of those appearances signaled how seriously SM Entertainment treated the dual-market launch.
