Mega Stones are tied to Mega Evolution, a mechanic first introduced in Pokémon X and Y and confirmed to return in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. In Z-A's Battle Club, Ranked Battles reward exclusive Mega Stones at certain ranks, with the stones for some forms split across three seasons, and the story centers on Rogue Mega Evolution, wild Pokémon in Lumiose City Mega Evolving on their own.
