Rayman Legends
Fifth main Rayman title, acclaimed for visuals and gameplay.
Rayman Legends, a 2013 platformer from Ubisoft Montpellier and published by Ubisoft, stands as the fifth main installment in the Rayman series and follows directly from 2011’s Rayman Origins. It launched across Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PlayStation Vita in August and September 2013, with PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions arriving on February 18, 2014. A Stadia version appeared in November 2021, and a Nintendo Switch port called Rayman Legends Definitive Edition hit North America, Europe, and Australia on September 12, 2017. The game was first revealed at E3 2012 for the Wii U, originally slated for that console’s launch window. A delay to February 2013 allowed for final polish, but after the financial failure of ZombiU, Ubisoft pushed the release back another six months and expanded it to multiple platforms. Critics widely praised Rayman Legends for its visuals, level design, controls, soundtrack, overall gameplay, and sheer amount of content. Despite slow initial sales, it had moved over a million copies by 2014. A reimagined remake, Rayman Legends Retold, is scheduled to be released on October 1st, 2026.
The gameplay builds on Rayman Origins, letting up to four players (depending on the platform) navigate levels together. Collecting Lums—by touching them, defeating enemies, or freeing captured Teensies—unlocks new worlds, which can be tackled in any order once available. Alongside returning characters Rayman, Globox, and the Teensies, players can now control Barbara the Barbarian Princess, her sister, and their cousins after rescuing them in certain stages. Murfy the greenbottle, first seen in Rayman 2: The Great Escape, returns as an assist character. He can cut ropes, activate mechanisms, grab enemies, and help gather Lums. Some levels require cooperation to progress. On Wii U, PlayStation Vita, and PlayStation 4, a second player can directly control Murfy using touch controls (the Wii U GamePad, Vita’s front touch screen, or DualShock 4 touchpad). In single-player mode, control switches to Murfy during specific sections while the computer handles the main character. On PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC, Murfy moves automatically, and players prompt him with button presses.

Reader's Guide
Rayman Legends was announced at E3 2012 for Wii U and planned for the console's launch window, but was delayed multiple times. The first delay was to February 2013 for finishing touches; a second delay of six months occurred due to the financial failure of ZombiU, and the game was made multi-platform. This upset fans, who started a petition with over 11,000 signatures. Developers expressed distaste for the delay, and creator Michel Ancel was photographed with protesters. In response, Ubisoft released the Online Challenges mode for free on Wii U in April 2013. The game sold over one million copies by 2014, despite slow initial sales. A remake, Rayman Legends Retold, is scheduled for December 3, 2026.
