The game follows Patricia Wagon, a cybernetic peace officer voiced by Stephanie Komure, who is tasked by the Galactic Penal Squad to recapture a group of convicts called the Hooligan Sisters. During their escape, one sister breaks open a canister that infests Planet Land with monsters. Patricia is authorized to use her Siren Helmet and Pellet Shooter, and receives assistance from General Gendarmor (a mechanical armor that can extract her from battles), Ugly Twitching Dog (U.T.D., which creates reload points), and HQ (who monitors her actions).

Gameplay involves navigating levels to find all escaped convicts and return to the exit as quickly as possible, with each level having a Par Time for speed runners. Patricia can push blocks in and out using her Siren Helmet, using them as platforms or to destroy enemies. Other block types include launcher blocks and colored blocks that change the plane of switching. The player has three Heart Drives; losing all three requires restarting the level. Floppy disks restore hearts and can be found or obtained by shooting enemies.

A free update in May 2012 added five new levels, improved 3D effects, and the option to restart the level. Later that year, Mighty Switch Force! Hyper Drive Edition was released for the Wii U, featuring redrawn graphics similar in style to A Boy and His Blob, off-screen play via the Wii U GamePad, the 3DS update content, and new Hyper Mode levels that remaster all previous levels at higher difficulty. A Steam version was released in June 2015.

Mighty Switch Force! is notable as the third entry in WayForward's Mighty series, following Mighty Flip Champs! and Mighty Milky Way. Its release on the Nintendo 3DS eShop in December 2011 was followed by a free update in May 2012 that added five new levels and improved 3D effects. The game's high-definition version, Hyper Drive Edition, launched alongside the Wii U in North America on November 18, 2012, and in Europe on December 6, 2012, with redrawn graphics and Hyper Mode levels. A Steam version arrived in June 2015. The game received favorable reviews on all platforms according to Metacritic, with IGN praising the 3DS version's gameplay and presentation but criticizing its short length. Its legacy includes a direct sequel, Mighty Switch Force! 2 (June 2013), a spin-off titled Mighty Switch Force! Hose It Down!, and a third game, Mighty Switch Force! Academy (November 2015, PC). A downloadable content pack for Shantae: Half-Genie Hero added an additional story campaign featuring character costumes and gameplay mechanics from Mighty Switch Force. A collection, Mighty Switch Force! Collection, including the original, its sequel, Hyper Drive Edition, and Academy, was released for Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on July 25, 2019, and for Amazon Luna on November 24, 2020.
