Chromosome numbers vary: most *Vitis* subgenus Euvitis have 38 chromosomes (n=19), while subgenus Muscadinia has 40 (n=20). *Ampelocissus*, *Parthenocissus*, and *Ampelopsis* may have 40 (n=20), and *Cissus* often has 24 (n=12). These differences have led to reclassifications.
Distribution is mostly tropical, but some genera like *Ampelopsis* are restricted to north temperate areas, while *Nekemias*, *Parthenocissus*, *Vitis*, and *Yua* also live mainly in temperate zones. The family spans pantropical regions across Asia, Africa, Australia, the neotropics, and Pacific Islands, in habitats including tropical and temperate forests, savannas, and limestone mountains.
Viticulture—cultivating *Vitis* for grapes—drives the family’s economic value. Grapevine (*Vitis vinifera*) is one of the oldest fruit crops, domesticated 6,000–8,000 years ago in the Transcaucasian region, with over 40,000 cultivar names.
