Stamens are epipetalous, typically in multiples of four or five (most often four or eight), and often have a hypogynous disk. The calyx is gamosepalous, with (4)5(6) equal segments, five lobes shorter than the tube, persistent and often accrescent. The corolla has five joined petals forming a tube; shapes are rotate, tubular, campanulate, or funnel-shaped. The androecium has (2)(4)5(6) free stamens opposite the sepals (alternating with petals). They are usually fertile, but some groups (e.g., Salpiglossideae) have staminodes—one in *Salpiglossis* or three in *Schizanthus*. Anthers may touch at the top to form a ring or be completely free, dorsifixed or basifixed, with poricide dehiscence or small longitudinal cracks. Filaments can be filiform or flat, inserted inside the corolla tube or exserted. Microsporogenesis is simultaneous.
